NJ UBNJ Deer Management Program
Overview
Please review the following
information before attempting to contact someone from UBNJ.
Take note that each individual Property
Owner, Township, or Municipality might have additional
forms, rules, and regulations. UBNJ has created a set of
minimum documentation that explains the baseline criteria
for their Deer Management program.
NOTE: A current Firearms
Identification Card (FID) is required to sign up for ALL
hunts starting in 2008. If you don’t have one, please
apply with your local police department to obtain one or do
not apply to the program.
Just
because you belong to UBNJ organization it does NOT mean
that you can just start hunting at one of the identified
properties. You must first apply for each hunt individually
using the specific application form assigned to that hunt.
All hunt applications and the $10.00 non-refundable fee
will be sent to the address listed on the application.
At the end of the application process deadline, the UBNJ
hunt manager will communicate to the hunters their status.
Priority, for most hunts, will be based upon date of
application and past performance of hunter contribution. If
you are approved you must attend an orientation, pass a
proficiency test for each firearm (bow and/or shotgun/ML)
and receive written permission from the Hunt Manager. Each
hunter must be able to shoot 3 out of 4 arrows with broad
heads into a 9 inch pie plate or 3D target vital zone at 20
yards. For the shotgun or muzzleloader test, the hunter
must be able to shoot 3 out of 4 slugs or bullets into a 9
inch ring at 50 yards. No exceptions. Don’t wait to
start shooting when you take your test. We will be limiting
these orientations and will not be giving any special
treatments unless more hunters are needed during the
season.
Hunts with specific "additional
requirements" may have their own specific
application/eligibility form. For example, a Property
Owner, Township, or Municipality might require each hunter
to attend a work day to clean up the property or post the
land.
NOTE: Applications will not
be accepted for hunts prior to UBNJ posting each hunt on
the website.
How do I find about UBNJ
Hunts?
The UBNJ web site, the UBNJ
magazine, attending a regional meeting, attending a county
meeting, and attending/participating in UBNJ events are the
best ways to find out. Talk to your fellow UBNJ members.
Talk to your county representatives who work for you! We
will not be contacting the members specifically for these
hunts. It is up to the members to make the effort.
How come some UBNJ Hunts are not
publicized?
Some properties/municipalities
desire confidentiality and for UBNJ to keep them on a
low-profile. In these cases, membership will be notified
via verbal or phone calls. Priority will be given to those
members who live or work in the immediate
area.
What is the application
process?
Communicate with the hunt's
manager for all questions related to that hunt. Email is
preferred, but a phone call is okay too.
1. Identify the hunts you are interested in. Please be
aware that UBNJ was asked by the property owners to hunt
the land to reduce the deer herd. If you have other land to
hunt and do not plan to use this property as your primary
hunting parcel, it might make sense for the individual to
let someone else who is not as fortunate to participate.
2. Send in a completed Hunt Application, Certificate of
Eligibility, and the $10 application fee to the UBNJ
address listed. Remember the $10 is not refundable and it
is not a guarantee that you will hunt the property.
3. The hunt manager will contact you with further details
if "selected".
What is the
"selection" process?
This depends on the
specific hunt and the wishes of the property
owner/municipality. Most are usually first come, first
serve (based on the post mark date) or lottery style
depending on the number of participants/applications. In
addition, some property owners/municipalities have a
"preferred candidate" profile. Some examples of a
"preferred candidate" include: years of hunting experience,
local residents/proximity to the property, NJ Firearms ID
Card, background checks, safety/proficiency tests,
orientation, etc.
Please remember UBNJ Hunts
are not trophy hunts. Members who live locally are given
preference because of the need to harvest antlerless deer.
All UBNJ Hunts require each participant to harvest at least
one (or more) antlerless deer before taking a buck per
hunting season.
Each UBNJ member is only
allowed to participate in 2 (two) UBNJ Hunts per year.
How much does it cost?
A $10 non-refundable application fee plus another
$20 hunt fee (if selected) will be required. These costs
are used to enhance the organization and provide funding
for all UBNJ efforts. Also, your UBNJ membership must be
up-to-date during the hunting season. If your membership is
set to expire at any time during a hunt that you are
participating in, you MUST renew before you nock an arrow.
This is due to insurance regulations.
UBNJ Member Interest
If you are not going to be able to show up and hunt
on a consistent basis, then please do not sign up. Please
plan to make every effort to hunt the property as much as
you can so that we can manage the herd. Again, these are
not trophy hunts. By taking the antlerless deer, we can
then expect the herds to get healthier and also to reduce
property damage, lyme disease and automobile accidents in
our communities. UBNJ is for every bowhunter and by
reducing the deer herd becomes a conservationist for that
property.
Thanks for your participation in
this program.
