Do Bows Come Out of
the Box Already Tuned from the Factory?
The answer to the question is
No! Bows are basically just assembled at the factory.
When you take any bow out of the box, the bow has to be
set-up or “tuned”.
Bow “set-up” starts with first taking the
string and cables off the bow and setting them to the
correct lengths that are on your bottom limb tag. These
lengths are specific for a reason. These lengths put the
cam or cams in the proper position where the bow will work
at optimum tune and optimum performance.
Twin cam bows for example have to be synchronized and
timed. Improper synchronization causes the cams to roll
over at different times. If one cam rolls over before the
other this will make arrow selection difficult because this
will cause porpoising arrow flight. It will also cause the
bow to move up and down while aiming.
Once the cams are synchronized they have to be timed.
Proper timing is when the bow is at full draw and both
modules stop against the power cables in a vertical
position. If timing is too far advanced, the modules push
too hard against the cables. If the timing is retarded, the
modules fall short of reaching the vertical position
against the cables. Both of these problems will cause
difficulty in making an arrow selection and less than
optimum performance.
Properly synchronized and timed cams will increase your
arrow speed and your energy by as much as 6-10 feet per
second and as much as 2 to 4 foot pounds of kinetic energy.
Hybrid cam bows have to be properly synchronized and single
cam bows have to be timed so the power module stops in the
vertical position against the cable.
If your bow does not fit you correctly, do not alter your
string and cable lengths. Altering these lengths also
affect “your poundage and your “let off”,
as well as performance and aiming.
